Retirement

READY TO UNRETIRE? Here are 4 Ways to Get Back Into the Game

When I made the decision to retire a few years back I did so with a plan to, at some point, take on a part-time job to fill my days and keep me active and social. Almost two years post-retirement, I have yet to go down that path although it is still on the radar. Instead, I have spent my time writing, traveling, grandma-ing and finally getting back to more golf following ligament reconstruction surgery for osteoarthritis.  My days are full and I am loving it all.  Many people worry about how they will stay busy in retirement but boredom isn’t what is driving a desire to eventually get back “out there.”  It’s more about having some structure to my days and being in a position to help people and solve problems.  And since I have moved to a different state, working or volunteering can also help me become part of the community, and familiarize myself with my new setting. I continue to consider my options for moving forward in this direction but on my terms and with no urgency.  My approach has been to just go with the flow and see where it takes me.

Ready to Retire?

A word of caution if you are contemplating leaving a full-time corporate position yet unsure if you are ready to say goodbye to the 9 to 5 way of life for good. It can prove difficult to get back into a similar type of situation later in life. Although you are highly regarded in your current role, applying that respect and knowledge to a resume may not be easy.  Trust me when I tell you that age discrimination still exists.  Unless you are in a toxic work environment or otherwise extremely unhappy, staying put is probably a good idea until you are ready to semi-retire or retire completely.

Ready to Un-retire?

Here are some avenues to consider:

CONSULTING

I reached out to my previous employer a few months ago regarding a remote or consulting position. Soon after I realized that probably isn’t the direction I want to go. I believe I would find more fulfillment in something new.   However, if your previous profession is still interesting to you consulting can be a good way to share your knowledge and help elevate others in the same line of work.  Your past business relationships may help you get connected to the people who will likely benefit from your expertise.  With consulting, you can contribute as much time as you choose.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

Although it seems a bit overwhelming to consider learning a new trade at this time in my life, it is also exciting to think about doing something completely different.  Is there something you always thought would be a good fit but never had the chance to pursue?  This could be the time.  I am not talking about a four-year degree here.  Although, it could certainly be accomplished if that is your goal.  But did you know you could become a certified Life Coach in 6-12 months?  You can teach yoga or fitness after around 200 hours of training.  A Real Estate license can also be obtained in a relatively short time frame. Just a few things I have recently looked at.  I also remain highly engaged in my writing/blogging and have discovered some beneficial online writing courses.

Don’t think of retirement as an end. You will find most anything you set your sights on is obtainable and can open up a whole new world.

PART-TIME RETAIL OR SERVICE INDUSTRY

Another direction to go may be a job working in a neighborhood retail shop.  These jobs are usually flexible with schedules and provide a great way to exercise interpersonal skills. They will keep you active without being overly demanding. You can get some great merchandise discounts too! Retail also offers opportunities for seasonal work. A great option if you do not want a long-term commitment.

VOLUNTEER

If you want to get out a few days a week and have a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day volunteering can be a great way to go.  I recently reached out to the Ronald McDonald House of Arizona, having previously worked with the program in Colorado. Organizations are always in need of more volunteers and there are endless areas in which to serve from fundraising to food preparation, or working events such as Special Olympics. You may find volunteering satisfying in itself but if you still want to find a working situation, it can be a good way to stay active until the right opportunity comes along.

Retirement isn’t written in stone and it can change along the way. Try some different things and find your happy place. That is what this phase is all about.
