What Are You Reading This Summer?

Even though we usually associate cozying up next to a crackling fire in winter as the ultimate reading time, summer can also be a great opportunity to catch up on our books. Beach reads are a big hit for this reason! Or what about lounging by the pool, chilling on a park bench, or riding shotgun on a long road trip? All prime times for summer reading. As for me, I stuck to my usual habit of reaching for the latest works by my favorite authors. I’d been eagerly waiting for Kate Morton’s new novel Homecoming and snagged a copy as soon as it hit the shelves. The only problem was… I couldn’t put it down!

In typical Kate Morton fashion, Homecoming weaves the unraveling of family secrets in dual narratives set years apart. As usual, there is a gothic-style home at the center of the story, though this one actually features two of them. On Christmas Eve in 1959, a local man makes a gruesome discovery on the grounds of a grand and mysterious house. The small town in Southern Australia becomes embroiled in its most shocking and perplexing murder case. In 2018, Jess, a journalist living in London, is summoned back to Australia when her grandmother, who raised her, takes a fall and is admitted to the hospital. During the stay at her grandmother’s house, she stumbles upon a book detailing the police investigation into the Turner Family Tragedy of Christmas Eve, 1959. As she quickly flips through the pages, she uncovers a surprising link between her own family and this notorious unsolved murder mystery.
I had a good time attempting to solve the puzzle and felt quite pleased when I believed I had succeeded. But then I realized I was only partially right. There were still more surprises ahead.
Bottom line, I devoured it and I think you will too.
P.S. So, here are a couple of other books I’ve been reading lately. “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris is a bunch of humorous essays about the author’s everyday life. I found some parts of it pretty entertaining. I’ve also been flipping through my copy of “Chicken Soup for the Golfer’s Soul.” which I’ve had for a while. I bring it out occasionally and read some chapters for inspiration regarding this crazy game in which I partake. Just like the other books in the “Chicken Soup” series, it’s wonderful.
