Finding Joy in the Everyday: Embracing Life’s Simple Wonders

Some years ago, my husband and I stayed at a bed and breakfast in the Colorado mountains. One morning as we enjoyed breakfast with the other guests, a young photographer began to share his experiences in shooting landscapes throughout the country.  “Every state has beauty” he announced, “except Kansas”.  Now, having been born and raised there, I found the statement not only offensive but absolutely incorrect. It’s true that the state lacks majestic mountains (although it does boast some pretty scenic rolling hills), heart-stopping beaches, or even an outstanding national park.  Yet there is beauty there. It can be found in its smaller, more subtle wonders.

I recall from my time there, a huge field of sunflowers near the office building where I worked.  What some may not know about these amazing flowers is that they are aptly named for how they follow the sun throughout the day in the summertime.   In the morning, all the sunflowers will face east, in the direction of the rising sun. As the sun moves, so will the sunflower heads to follow it, landing in the west as the sun begins to set.  I looked forward to the spectacle each day.  It was fascinating, Mr Camerman. What a shame you missed it as you searched for the big, obvious thing.  It would have made an incredible photograph for your collection.

It makes me wonder what other little marvels are happening around us that we are missing as we wait for something more spectacular.  Like the photographer, do we overlook smaller, yet remarkable things because we are hyper-focused on something bigger? Throughout our lives, we are encouraged to follow our dreams and keep our eyes on the prize. While that is sound advice, there is usually much to see on the way to the finish line if we are paying attention. I think it’s human nature, especially in our younger years, to stay focused on our goals. The big promotion, new home, or growing our families. But as life is slowing down in retirement, I find myself in awe of the simple things that may have gone unnoticed before. Simple wonders in life are small, everyday experiences that bring us pleasure, amazement, and a sense of appreciation for the world around us. They remind us to find beauty in the ordinary and to be present in the moment. Some of the greatest joys in life can be as simple as:

Sunsets and Sunrises: The beauty of the changing colors in the sky during sunset and sunrise can be truly breathtaking.

Nature’s Sounds: The sound of rustling leaves, chirping birds, and flowing water brings a sense of calm.

Laughter: Genuine laughter is contagious and never fails to fill the air with happiness

Kind Gestures: Witnessing or, better yet performing acts of kindness, no matter how small, always impacts my outlook in a positive way.

Starry Nights: Looking up at a clear night sky, filled with stars and maybe a few constellations, reminds me of the massiveness of the universe.

Freshly Brewed Coffee: The aroma and taste of a freshly brewed cup is both invigorating and comforting.

Ocean Waves: The sound of ocean waves crashing on the shore can be incredibly soothing and brings to mind the power and vastness of the sea.

Rainbows: Seeing a rainbow after a rainstorm reminds me of the beauty that can come after challenging times.

Childlike Wonder: Observing the excitement and curiosity of my grandchildren as they discover the world around them.

A Good Book: Getting lost in a captivating book and immersing myself in its world is always incredibly satisfying.

A Hug: There is nothing like the power of a hug to convey love, support, and connect.

Quiet Moments: Finding solace in quiet moments of reflection and mindfulness provides me with a sense of peace.

Falling Leaves: The beauty of leaves gently falling in autumn, painting the world in vibrant colors.

Music: The way music can summon emotions and transport me to different times and places is magical.

Random Encounters: Striking up a conversation with a stranger and discovering shared interests or stories. Unexpected connections make my day.

Time with Friends: I have recently learned to appreciate this more than ever.

I say let’s keep dreaming and don’t stop swinging for the fences.  Make the big moves and expect great things to happen in life.  But, also remember to notice the ordinary moments and subtle miracles constantly happening around us.
