Take Me Out To The Ballgame; #9 Fenway Park

Another summer, another pin in my map. I will have to up my game. I need to do more than one of these a year if I am to achieve my goal. There are 30 Major League Ballparks and I am on #9 and in my sixties. Easy math. But, I am thrilled to have had the chance this year. Visiting one of the most celebrated stadiums in the league last month was incredible. Fenway is the oldest active ballpark in the MLB. It was originally built in 1912, substantially rebuilt in 1934, then received major renovations and modifications in the 21 Century. Fenway is home to the famed Green Monster which is the highest wall among all current MLB Fields.

We headed to the park where we met family also in town from Kansas and Missouri. Before the game, we took a stroll down Jersey Street outside the stadium. Here we ran into Big League Brian who graciously posed with us for a selfie. This 10ft stilt walker has been entertaining fans outside the stadium for over a decade. A variety of concessions line Jersey Street. We enjoyed a brat with kraut while listening to the the Hot Tamales Brass Band prior to first pitch.

The Red Sox took on the Houston Astros in an exciting game. The home team lead 3-1 up to the 7th inning where the Astros scored 4. They would go on to score 3 more in the 9th. And despite another run by the Sox in the bottom of the inning the they fell to the Astros 8-4. The Astros would go on to sweep the 3-game series.

This was my first time in Boston. We spent the day after the game taking in some historical landmarks and exploring the city. We had a drink at Union Oyster House which is rumored to have been a favorite haunt of JFK. Afterward, we had lunch next door at The Bell in Hand Tavern which opened in 1795.

In addition to seeing Fenway, this trip was the first step in another bucket list item. Visiting beautiful Nantucket Island in the cape. We headed to Hyannis early the next morning. Stay tuned!
